ETPSSM (NMA) THERAPY
What is ETPS Therapy?
Electro Therapeutic Point Stimulation is a non-invasive integrated therapy that uses a Neurostimulator to apply very low doses of concentrated D/C (direct current – the current our body runs on) to specific groups of acupuncture, trigger and motor points. Founded by Bruce Hocking, Master Acupuncturist, this therapy was developed to alleviate chronic muscle and soft tissue pain.
The Neurostimulator is a hand-held battery-powered device that registers differences in surface skin resistance to locate acupoints. When located, a safe, low frequency electrical stimulus is held on the acupoint to trigger the release of endorphins. Pain relief is immediate and can be long-lasting.
ETPS is well-tolerated and can be administered to treat chronic pain, including arthritis, back problems, carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia, headaches, lower back pain, migraines, neck & shoulder pain, sport injuries, tennis elbow, whiplash, etc.
What causes chronic pain?
Chronic pain originates with neuropathy, which is caused by muscle contraction. Most chronic pain stems from the core of the body, which consists of the gait - the hips, spine, and lumbar- sacral region.
Poor posture and repetitive strain creates a ‘pool’ of micro-injuries that build up over time to impinge the nerve root. An acidic state within the body due to inappropriate diet can also contribute to the tightening of muscles.
Sometimes chronic pain disrupts the nervous system into a continuous pain mode even after the physical damage has healed. Chronic pain sufferers are often emotionally distressed as well due to the fact that the pain is worsened by this imbalance.
How does ETPS Therapy work?
ETPS combines Eastern and Western medicine using the principles of acupuncture, musculoskeletal trigger points, neuromuscular and neural therapies.
ETPS assists the nervous system in controlling muscle spasms, body temperature regulation and blood vessel dilation to regulate properly. It helps to rebalance the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous systems.
The ETPS device actually changes the muscles tissue, relaxing muscles that entrap the nerves, allowing the body to naturally relieve its own pain for long periods of time.
ETPS therapy is effective in identifying the root causes of pain – the therapeutic benefits are based on the following four principles:
Circulation response – increasing or decreasing as required
Autonomic/parasympathetic response – ‘gates’ in the ANS (Autonomic Nervous System), which covers 90% of the body
Endorphin response – released by stimulation of neural points and is many times stronger than morphine without side effects
Myofascial release – relax contracted muscles to relieve interference of the nerves, reduce over- sensitivity and improve ROM (range of motion)
Scar Therapy - scars throughout the dermatomes and meridians can restrict the flow of energy, disrupt the lymphatic and circulatory systems and interfere with muscle energy
Relief from pain may often occur in the first or second treatment. Most patients require 2-10 treatments for permanent results, with some chronic patients requiring ongoing treatments. ETPS can be individualized to any patient's needs and applied non-invasively.
ETPS protocols bridge many different treatment philosophies to provide therapeutic responses where other modalities fail to achieve successful results. Because it is effective in the diagnosis of root causes of pain, ETPS therapy can serve as an invaluable tool to eliminating pain.
The many benefits of ETPS therapy include:
- Pain reduction/elimination
- Increased blood circulation
- Aids with digestion and toxin removal
- Improved internal organ function
- Relief from negative habits and addictions
- Greater sense of overall well-being
- Prevents/ breaks down scar tissue
- Improves structural alignment
